YMCA Swim Team Kicks Off Season

The 2013 Okmulgee YMCA Swim Team is now two meets into their season and has increased in size by double the number of swimmers from 2012.  The team is comprised of a strong returning group and a group of eager youngsters ready to learn.

The first meet, held at Tulsa Park’s Reed Pool on Monday, June 17th started the season.  Team results are as follows:

Harvest progresses with sunny weather

The week began with rainfall, but the rest of the
week was sunny and dry, allowing for substantial progress in small grain
harvest and row crop planting and emergence, according to today's
Oklahoma Crop Weather report issued by the USDA-NASS Oklahoma Field
Office. Small grain harvest was approximately halfway complete, and
canola harvest was three-quarters complete by the end of the week.
Precipitation for the week averaged 0.92 of an inch for the state; most
of which fell on Monday. The June 18th U.S. Drought Monitor reported 42
percent of the state was in a moderate to exceptional drought, with the
worst affected areas in southwestern Oklahoma and the Panhandle.
Problems with grasshoppers were reported in various parts of the state.
Topsoil moisture conditions continued to be rated mostly adequate.
Subsoil moisture conditions were rated 46 percent adequate and 53
percent short to very short. There were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork.

Small Grains: Harvest of wheat, rye and oats made significant progress.
Wheat harvest was 55 percent complete by Sunday, 26 points behind the
five-year average. Rye harvested was 49 percent complete by week's end,
26 points behind normal. Oats in the soft dough stage reached 94 percent
and 47 percent of oats were harvested by Sunday, 28 points behind the
five-year average.

Canola was rated mostly fair to poor condition. Virtually all of canola
was mature and 75 percent had been harvested by the end of the week.

Row Crops: Corn and peanuts were rated mostly in good condition, while
sorghum and cotton were rated mostly good to fair. Ninety-eight percent
of corn had emerged by the end of the week. Sorghum seedbed preparation
was 96 percent complete, and 78 percent of the crop had been planted by
the end of the week. Half of the crop was emerged by week's end, nine
points below the five-year average. Soybean seedbed preparation was 91
percent complete, and 65 percent had been planted. Soybeans emerged was
42 percent complete by the end of the week, 27 points below normal.
Peanuts emerged was complete by Sunday and 32 percent was pegging, 17
points ahead of the five-year average. Cotton planting was 71 percent
complete and 58 percent had emerged by Sunday, 25 points behind normal.

Watermelons running vines was 88 percent complete. Twenty-nine percent
of the crop was setting fruit, 12 points behind normal.

Hay: Conditions of alfalfa and other hay were rated mostly good to fair.
Sunny and dry conditions allowed for significant progress in hay
cutting. A first cutting of alfalfa hay was 96 percent complete by the
end of the week, while a second cutting was only 38 percent complete, 36
points behind the five year average. A first cutting of other hay was 64
percent complete.

Pasture and Livestock: Conditions of pasture and range were rated mostly
good to fair. Just over half of the livestock in Oklahoma was rated in
good condition, while 32 percent was rated as fair.
